Orchestral Engagements

Since 1994, David has enjoyed an association with Japan’s Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa (OEK) as guest kit drummer and also featured soloist.  Played with many famous Japanese artists.  Featured soloist with Jean-Pierre Wallez in a violin/percussion concerto in 1997.

Regular guest drummer with MSO.  Soloist in Metropolis series 2006

Featured drummer with SSO, ASO and AYO.

David was presented with a rare musical opportunity in 2006 when a concerto was commissioned by OEK and Arts Victoria, composed specially for him, to showcase his extraordinary talent as a drumkit soloist.  This project was initiated by the late Maestro Iwaki and composed by Toshiyuki Watanabe – “Essay for Drumkit and Small Orchestra dedicated to David Jones”.  World Premiere in Japan in September 2006, and again in Melbourne in October 2006 at a Memorial concert for Maestro Iwaki.

Solo Artist

1994 – 98 extensive tour London, Belgium, France, Germany, LA – solo drum presentations at percussion events.
One week at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club.  These were all self-funded tours and activity to further my career.

2005 – 2007 David developed 2 shows as a soloist, featuring two drumkits, Tibetan and Japanese singing bowls, kalimba and percussion.  Presented “Spirited Percussion” (4 concerts in Melbourne) and new work “Kit and Kaboodle”

2007 – 2008 David recorded a solo drum CD, the ABC released double CD/DVD package, ‘Colours of the Drum’ (with gorgeous artwork) which was nominated for Best World Music Award at the Arias.

2008 – 2011 David developed his current show, called ‘Colours of the Drum’. In this concert, David plays 2 drum kits, one ‘sripped bare’- laid out in its pieces across the stage. He plays each part of the kit separately, assembling it as he goes, and builds up to an exhilarating audio and visual climax.

2011- David is currently developing a new show, called ‘Drumming in the Light’
